  • Servings: 3-4
  • Difficulty: easy

Juicy, flavorful burgers with a bright, sweet sauce.

  • 1 pound ground turkey 93% lean
  • 1 1/4 cup diced white onion (divided)
  • 3/4 cup mango peach preserves (divided)
  • 1/2 cup crumbled queso fresco, plus more for topping
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp chili powder
  • 3 or 4 burger buns
  • 1 tbs dark rum

  1. Pre-heat grill on high.
  2. In a medium bowl, mix together turkey, 1/2 cup of the diced onion, 1/4 cup of the preserves, queso fresco, and seasonings.
  3. Form into 3 or 4 patties as desired. Spray or brush olive oil onto both sides.
  4. Grill on searing rack approximately 5 minutes on each side until cooked through.
  5. While burgers are cooking, coat a small pan with olive oil and heat to medium high. Add remaining 3/4 cup diced onion and season with salt and pepper to taste. Cook stirring frequently until onions are translucent and soft, approximately 4 minutes.
  6. Add dark rum to onions and scrape off any brown bits at the bottom of the pan.
  7. After rum has evaporated, reduce heat to low and add remaining 1/2 cup preserves. Stir to combine and cook additional 2 minutes.
  8. Toast buns on grill during the last minute of cooking if desired.
  9. Assemble burgers, topping them with onion preserve sauce, and crumbled queso fresco.

Some days cooking at my house is like being on Chopped, and my refrigerator and pantry are my basket. This was one such day, and it happened to work out really well! This was my first go at actually measuring what I did so I could write it down. I usually just eye-ball everything when I’m cooking, but I’m glad I wrote it all down because these burgers were seriously delicious.

Years ago we found a recipe for turkey burgers with mango chutney in and on them which inspired this recipe. I had half a jar of these mango peach preserves and decided to give it a try. We are all big mango fans in this house, and I love the bright pop of sweetness in the savory burger.

I’ve enjoyed a few flavors of Bonne Maman preserves, and they are delightful! (I’m not an affiliate I just really like them.)

In our house one pound of turkey makes two adult sized burgers, and two child sized burgers. If I were only cooking for adults I’d probably do three burgers, but that’s your preference. You could certainly make four equal sized respectable burgers.

I like utilizing the grill because it means my husband takes some of the workload for dinner, and I have less to clean. Since turkey is leaner, we’ve had issues in the past with them sticking to the grill, so this time we sprayed them with olive oil first. While my husband was grilling the burgers, I threw together this easy topping, and dinner is served! We served them with sweet potato fries. I hope you give it a try and enjoy!
